West Cork Leo Club

Bantry Lions Club will sponsor a youth club to cater for the needs of the young people of the  area.  This will be a Leo Club and will provide the youth of West Cork with an opportunity for development and contribution, individually and collectively, as responsible members of the local, national and international community.

We plan to visit other Leo Clubs in the coming weeks to learn how they are getting on and to pick up some tips.  Members of other youth organisations who care to are invited to accompany Lions members on these trips.

Leo Clubs in Ireland

At present there are 5 Leo Clubs in Ireland. They are:

  • Dalkey
  • Dublin
  • Dun Laoghaoire
  • Carrigaline
  • Kinsale
  •
  • For a school-based club (members from one school or college) contact your principal or activities officer about Leo clubs. Use this Web site as an information resource. If the school is interested, approach your local Lions club. All Leo clubs must have a sponsoring Lions club.
  • For a community-based club (members from the local area), contact your local Lions club.
  • Leo Clubs are youth organization of Lions Clubs International. The word L E O stands for Leadership, Experience, Opportunity. It is the world's largest youth organization.

The Leo Club objective is to "to provide the youth of the world with an opportunity for development and contribution, individually and collectively, as responsible members of the local, national and international community."

Leo Clubs encourage youths to develop leadership qualities by participating in social service activities. There should be a Lions Club to sponsor and initiate a Leo Club. Leo Club members are addressed as "Leos" and they conduct various projects in the fields of health care, elders, children, disabled, literacy and education, and self-development. Leos can raise funds by conducting fund raising projects.

They can conduct projects with the other Leo Clubs, sponsoring Lions Club, or with an outside organization. Leo Clubs are sponsored by Lions clubs and are an official program of the Lions clubs international.

Leos conduct monthly general and board meetings. Typical Leo club officers include President, Secretary, Vice Presidents and Directors. At the end of every year Leos hold a conference annually. In this conference Leos are recognized for their performance. Every country where Leo clubs exist is divided into districts. Each district have a separate executive officers which includes District President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Directors. Leos also hold a multiple district conferences annually. There is a democratic procedure for Leos to select a District President. If a Leo district receives more than one nomination for the seat of District President, an election is called. Same procedure is made for the post of District Vice President.
